Kūlia I Ka Nuʻu
Strive for the summitYou stand at Sand Island, harbor on one side, Diamond Head on the other. Two of the six fields here are about to be rebuilt from the ground up.
The place
Built by the community in 1998. Run by Hawaii Softball Foundation since 2012.
The state owns the land, but neither the state nor the city pays to run Mauliola. HSF does.

What wore out
Fields 1 and 2 are the oldest at Mauliola.
When the four-field quad was rebuilt in 2021, Fields 1 and 2 had to wait for funding. In 2023, college players who call Sand Island home named what is missing:
- Shade
- Drinking water
- Power
- A scoreboard
What gets built
Same place. New fields.
Each picture below is an artist’s rendering of the plan, drawn on the engineer’s preliminary drawings.

The plan
What the two new fields come with
The scope filed with the state for the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund project “Ballfields, Sand Island SRA.” Demolition of the old fields is planned for this winter.
The promise
These fields stay public.
The state lease already requires fair public use of the fields, with no exclusive use. The rebuild was filed in 2025 for the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, and land that fund helps build must stay in public outdoor recreation use, for good.
